Privacy
Privacy at StoryPress.
StoryPress is a publishing app where children aged 3–8 create their own English storybooks. We know you are trusting us with your family's information — especially your child's. This policy explains, in plain language, what we collect, why, and the choices you have.

About this policy
This policy applies to the StoryPress app and website at app.mhj.nz ("StoryPress", "we", "us"). It explains how we handle information for parents or guardians who hold an account and the children they add.
StoryPress is designed to be set up and managed by a parent or guardian. A child cannot create an account on their own.
Information we collect
We collect only what we need to run the app and create your child's storybooks:
- Parent account: your email address, and your name if you sign in with Google.
- Child profile: your child's first name, age range, and the character preference you choose. We do not ask for your child's surname, address, or school.
- Learning activity: which words and stories your child has met, game results, and progress through the 10-session cycle.
- Creations: the stories and colouring pages your child makes in the app.
- Payments: if you subscribe, your payment is processed by Stripe. We receive a record of your subscription, but we do not store your full card number.
- Technical data: basic device and usage information (for example, a device identifier used to manage free trials, and standard analytics) to keep the app working and secure.
How we use your information
- To create and save your child's stories, colouring pages and books.
- To track learning progress and show it to you on the parent dashboard.
- To provide your account, subscription and customer support.
- To keep the app safe, fix problems, and improve how it works.
We do not use your child's information for advertising, and we do not sell your or your child's personal information to anyone.
Children's privacy & parental consent
Protecting children is at the centre of how we built StoryPress. A parent or guardian sets up the account and adds the child, so any information about your child is collected with your consent and under your control.
We collect only the minimum a child needs to use the app, and we handle it with extra care. As a parent, you can review, correct or delete your child's information, and stop further collection, at any time (see "Your rights and choices").
We do not knowingly allow children to create their own accounts, and the app does not let children share personal information publicly.
How we use artificial intelligence
In the later sessions of a storybook cycle, StoryPress uses Google's Gemini service to help generate a personalised story, and Google's text-to-speech to read stories aloud.
We send only your child's first name to the AI service, and only to create your child's story. We never send your child's surname, age, location or school. Generated stories pass through safety checks before your child sees them.
How we share information
We do not sell personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run StoryPress, under contracts that require them to protect it and use it only for us:
- Supabase — secure database, sign-in and file storage.
- Google (Gemini & Cloud Text-to-Speech) — story generation and read-aloud audio.
- Stripe — subscription payments.
- Vercel — app hosting and basic, privacy-friendly analytics.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the safety of a child or another person.
Cookies & local storage
We use essential cookies to keep you signed in, and your device's local storage to remember activity such as free-play keepsakes. We use privacy-friendly analytics to understand how the app is used. We do not use advertising trackers.
How long we keep information
We keep your family's information only as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service, and we do not keep children's personal information for longer than necessary. When you delete your child's profile or your account, we delete or de-identify the associated personal information within a reasonable period, except where we must keep limited records to meet legal obligations.
How we protect information
We use technical and organisational safeguards — including encryption in transit, access controls and trusted infrastructure providers — to protect personal information. No online service can be completely secure, but we work to protect your family's information and to respond promptly if a problem occurs.
Where your information is processed
StoryPress relies on service providers that may store or process information in other countries, including the United States. Wherever your information is handled, we take steps to keep it protected.
Your rights and choices
As a parent or guardian, you can:
- See the information we hold about you and your child.
- Correct anything that is wrong.
- Delete your child's profile or your whole account.
- Withdraw consent and stop further collection of your child's information.
You can do most of this from the parent dashboard, or by contacting us (see "Contact us"). Depending on where you live, you may also have additional rights under your local privacy law.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make a significant change, we will let account holders know. The "Last updated" date at the top shows when this version took effect.
